With roots in South Wales and a commitment to helping businesses transition to electric, Black Horse is taking part in the EV Rally Cymru 2025 to champion the role of used electric vehicles. Preston Rogers, Consumer Distribution Director, explains why the rally matters, what his team is driving, and how Black Horse is helping dealers and customers accelerate the switch to electric
What has made Black Horse decide to get involved in the EV Rally Cymru?
As a business proudly based in South Wales, we’re supporting the EV Rally to help highlight how Wales is supporting the transition to electric.
The EV Rally Cymru shows what can be achieved when government, industry and infrastructure come together with purpose, and we want to play our part in that.
Confidence in electric vehicles comes from visibility and proof, and by taking part, we’re helping to demonstrate what EVs can do and how far they’ve come.
Please tell us about your team, who is driving and in what vehicles.
Our drivers are part of the Black Horse team based in Newport, South Wales, and they’ll be taking on the route in two used EVs. A Tesla Model 3 Long Range and a Hyundai IONIQ 5.
We chose these vehicles because they’re both proven, practical, and familiar to many customers making the switch. It’s a great way to showcase the capability of used EVs and the confidence they offer drivers every day.
Do you anticipate any challenges on the rally and do you have a strategy to get you through them?
We’re confident our vehicles will handle the route with ease. The real challenge is helping more people see that for themselves.
Every mile is an opportunity to show how capable used EVs are across distance and terrain.
We’ll be taking the same practical approach we encourage our customers to take; plan ahead, make use of the growing charging network, and enjoy the drive.
The rally will be checking in at some clean energy and innovation projects along the way. How important is renewable energy in the EV narrative?
Renewable energy is an essential part of the EV story because it’s what truly unlocks the environmental benefits of driving electric. Once on the road, the cleaner the energy used to charge a vehicle, the greater the reduction in its overall impact on the environment.
We’re really looking forward to seeing some of the clean energy projects along the route and learning more about the progress being made. It’s a great opportunity to understand what’s happening locally and bring that insight back to our dealers and customers.
By seeing first-hand how innovation in renewable energy supports the transport network, we can help raise awareness of the positive change already taking place and the difference it can make for everyone on the journey to a lower-carbon future.
Why are events like the EV Rally important to driving up EV adoption?
Events like this bring the transition to life. They make EVs visible, practical, and relatable. Seeing these vehicles in action, tackling real journeys, helps remove doubt and builds the confidence people need to take the next step.
It’s also a great opportunity to recognise the collaboration across the industry that’s making this possible.
How is Black Horse supporting the decarbonisation journey for dealers and customers?
We’re working closely with dealerships to help them realise the potential of the EV market.
Through a combination of education, tailored support, and dealer initiatives, we’re helping more businesses give customers the confidence to make the switch. In some cases, we’ve seen EV sales double where those support mechanisms are in place.
It shows the market opportunity is there and that by working together, we can help more people realise the benefits of going electric.
